A son is born to Mahan Singh. He is named Ran-jeet i.e. the winner of the war. At a very young age Ranjeet falls ill. He loses vision in one eye face gets filled with boils due to excessive medicines that he takes.
However, this loss is compensated with his extraordinary skill at horse-riding. He is also an expert swordsman.
There is great political unrest in Punjab as different Sikh Sects constantly battle each other out for want of power.
Mahan Singh, the leader of the Sukarchakia misl, is threatened by the leader of the Bangi misl ie Sahib Singh Bangi who is constantly trying to capture the region ruled by the Sukarchakia misl.
Finally Mahan Singh decides to meet them in battle. Ranjeet, who is still a boy, accompanies his father.
